Stucco and parging repair in Calgary: what it covers

Most calls begin with one visible problem. Underneath it, the job is usually one of these six repairs, often a combination.

Crack repair

Hairline shrinkage cracks, wider cracks, and the lines that open at window corners, door frames and wall joints. Each is cleaned out and filled with compatible material, not skimmed over.

Hail damage

Pitting, chipped faces and broken sections after a storm. We walk the full wall so the repair covers the damage that matters, not only the marks you noticed first.

Patching and colour-matching

Cut-outs and failed sections are rebuilt in layers, then textured and tinted to sit close to the surrounding finish. Weathered stucco is hard to match exactly, and we will say so up front.

Parging repair

The cement coating on foundation walls, entry steps and lower edges takes the worst of the water and frost. We remove what has let go and recoat it.

Loose or hollow sections

Stucco that sounds hollow when tapped or has lifted from the wall is taken back to solid material before anything new goes on.

Repainting repaired stucco

A patch often needs paint to disappear. We coat the repaired area, or the whole wall face, so any colour change lands at a natural break such as a corner.

What Calgary weather does to stucco and parging

Stucco and parging are hard-wearing finishes, but the climate here tests them every year. Water that gets into a hairline crack can freeze, expand and widen it, and chinook winds can swing a wall between freezing and thawing many times in one winter. Summer hail chips and pits the surface, and strong sun at our elevation fades colour and dries out paint.

Parging has it harder still. It sits at grade, where snowmelt, splashback from downspouts and frost in the soil all meet the foundation. Once a section lets go, water can reach the concrete behind it. On either surface, a problem is usually simpler to repair while it is still small.

How an assessment and quote works

  1. Send the details. Share your location in Calgary or the surrounding area, a close-up of the damage, a wider shot of the whole wall, and a line about what you have seen.
  2. We review it. Photos tell us a lot. Where we need to see the wall in person, we will arrange that. Estimates are free.
  3. You get a plain scope. We explain what needs repair, what can be left alone, and whether the problem points to something beyond surface work.
  4. Repair and finish. Failed material comes off, new material goes on, the finish is matched, and the work area is cleaned up.

When a wall needs more than a patch

Much stucco and parging damage is local and can be repaired in place. Some walls need more. Widespread lifting, repeated moisture staining or cracks that reopen after every patch point to a problem a surface repair will not solve, and we would rather tell you that at the estimate than repair over it.

When a wall is past patching, we can help you weigh up whether a targeted repair, new stucco or an EIFS-style exterior upgrade makes more sense for the house. For an example of a full new finish, see our bungalow stucco installation using a 2-inch EIFS system.

Questions about stucco and parging repair

Can you repair one section without redoing the whole wall?

Usually, yes. Localized damage is normally repaired in place. The visible difference between new and old finish is handled with texture, tint and, where needed, paint.

What photos should I send for a quote?

One close-up of each problem area, one wider shot showing the full wall, and one of any area that looks wet, stained or hollow. Add the neighbourhood so we know the travel.

Does a stucco repair need to be painted?

Often it does. Fresh material rarely matches weathered stucco on its own, so painting the repaired area or the wall face is part of making it blend.

Does cold weather affect stucco and parging work?

It can. Cement-based material needs suitable conditions to cure properly, so timing may depend on the forecast. We will advise when we assess your job.

Is it worth fixing small cracks before winter?

Generally, yes. Water that gets into a crack can freeze and widen it over a Calgary winter. Sealing a small crack is usually simpler than repairing the loose or broken stucco it can lead to.
