Calgary stucco repair

Stucco repair in Calgary that blends back in and holds up.

When stucco cracks, crumbles, or takes a hit, the repair needs to do two things: stop the damage from spreading and look like it belongs on the wall. Fix On Call provides residential stucco repair in Calgary and surrounding areas, assessed properly, prepped right and finished clean. Estimates are free.

Hail and weather damage

Calgary hail seasons leave behind pitting, cratering, and surface failures. We look at the actual extent and repair what needs to go — not just what is most visible.

When to call for stucco repair in Calgary

Calgary’s climate is hard on exterior stucco. The freeze-thaw cycle widens small cracks every winter, and hail seasons can compromise large sections of wall in a single afternoon. Catching a stucco problem early usually means a straightforward repair. Letting it go means water gets behind the surface, which turns a patch job into a bigger scope. Fix On Call focuses on residential work, where the detail matters and the finish needs to blend.

Not sure whether a crack is serious yet? Our article on why homeowners should fix stucco cracks and damage before they get worse walks through the warning signs. For everything our stucco and parging repair service covers, from hollow sections to repainting repaired stucco, see the service overview.

  • Cracks that are wider than a hairline or keep coming back after patching
  • Visible damage after a hail event — pitting, cratering, broken sections
  • Parging that is flaking, separating, or crumbling off the foundation
  • Soft or hollow-sounding stucco that suggests moisture behind the surface
  • Exterior repairs needed before listing a home for sale
  • Areas where a previous repair failed or never matched the surrounding finish

Why Calgary weather is so hard on stucco

Stucco is a tough cladding, but Calgary puts it through more stress than most cities. Knowing what is causing the damage helps explain why some repairs last and others fail within a couple of seasons.

Freeze-thaw cycles

Calgary can cross the freezing point many times in one winter. Water that gets into a crack freezes, expands and pushes the crack a little wider each time. A hairline in October can be an open gap by April, which is why cracks are worth repairing properly before winter rather than after it.

Chinook swings

A chinook can lift the temperature by 15°C or more in a few hours, then drop it again just as fast. The wall expands and contracts with each swing, and that repeated movement is what opens cracks at window corners, door frames and other weak points in the finish.

Hail

Calgary sits in what is often called Alberta’s hail alley, and summer storms regularly pit, crater and fracture exterior finishes. Hail damage is easy to underestimate from the ground. Small impact marks can break the finish coat and let water in even when the wall still looks mostly intact.

Strong sun and dry air

At over 1,000 metres of elevation, Calgary gets strong UV that fades stucco colour over time, especially on south- and west-facing walls. Dry air and wind also pull moisture out of fresh material quickly, which is one reason a repair needs the right conditions to cure.

How the repair gets done

Look at what is actually there

Some stucco damage is surface-level. Some has a moisture or movement cause underneath that needs addressing before any material goes back on. The scope of the repair starts with understanding what is actually happening at the wall.

Remove what is not holding

Patching over loose or failing material is what makes repairs fail again. Everything that has separated or lost bond comes off first. The area is prepped to a clean, stable surface before new stucco or parging is applied.

Finish so it fits the wall

A repaired section should not read as a patch. Texture and colour are matched to the surrounding finish so the corrected area looks like part of the wall — not a spot that got attention.

Matching colour and texture so the patch does not show

The part of a stucco repair most homeowners notice is whether it shows from the sidewalk. A good match comes down to three things: the texture, the colour and where the repair ends.

Texture. Stucco on Calgary homes ranges from rock and pebble dash on many older houses to sand, float, knockdown and smoother acrylic finishes on newer ones. The new finish has to use a similar aggregate size and the same application technique, or the repair reads as a patch even when the colour is right.

Colour. Existing stucco has usually faded from years of sun, so the original colour from when the house was built rarely matches the wall today. Matching to the wall as it looks now, and checking a small test area before the full finish goes on, gives a much closer result.

Where the repair ends. Blending is easier when a repair stops at a natural break such as a corner, a control joint or a trim line. When a wall is heavily faded or already carries several old patches, finishing the whole elevation, or exterior painting once the repairs have cured, can give a more even result than spot repairs alone. We explain the options before work starts so you know what the finished wall should look like.

When a stucco patch is not enough

Most stucco repairs are targeted: remove the damaged area, rebuild the layers and blend the finish. Sometimes the wall is telling you the problem is bigger than the visible crack. A patch on its own is unlikely to be the right fix when you see:

  • Cracks that return in the same place after earlier repairs, which usually points to movement or moisture that has not been dealt with
  • Soft, bulging or hollow-sounding areas that extend well past the visible damage
  • Dark staining, white mineral deposits or streaks below windows, decks and roof lines
  • Hail damage across most of a wall rather than a few isolated spots
  • Exposed or rusting mesh, or sections pulling away from the wall

In those situations the repair may need to open up a larger area to check the building paper, mesh and flashing behind the stucco, so the cause is fixed and not just the surface. On some walls the better answer is to refinish the full elevation instead of adding another patch to a wall that already has several.

When a home needs more than a repair, our Calgary stucco services page covers larger exterior stucco work. You can also see how a full new exterior comes together in our bungalow stucco installation using a 2-inch EIFS system.

Either way, the decision should come from what the wall actually shows during the assessment, not from a default answer.

Common stucco repair questions

Can a small crack just be caulked?

Caulk is not a stucco repair — it is a gap filler. It moves differently than stucco, does not match texture, and usually looks worse within a season or two. A proper stucco patch uses compatible material and bonds to the substrate the way the original coat did.

Does hail damage need to be repaired right away?

Not always urgently, but it should not sit through another winter. Hail pitting compromises the surface seal. Once water can get in and freeze, each cycle expands the damage. Addressing it after a hail season — before freeze-thaw — is the practical window.

When is the best time of year for stucco repair in Calgary?

Cement-based stucco and parging need above-freezing temperatures while they are applied and while they cure, so most exterior repair happens from spring through fall. A common guideline is to keep the air and the wall above about 5°C during application and for a couple of days after. Repairing open cracks before the first hard frost keeps water out of the wall over winter.

Will the repair colour match?

We work to match the existing colour and texture as closely as possible. Older stucco that has faded from UV exposure can be harder to match exactly — we will tell you honestly what to expect before the work starts, not after.

Should old stucco be patched or replaced?

If the stucco is still well bonded and the damage is localised, a repair is usually the practical choice. If cracks keep returning, large areas sound hollow, or water has damaged what is behind the stucco, a larger scope such as refinishing a full wall or new stucco may make more sense.

What is the difference between parging and stucco repair?

Parging is the mortar or cement coating applied to foundation walls and lower masonry surfaces. Stucco covers upper wall areas. Both fail similarly — cracking, separation, moisture damage — and Fix On Call handles both as part of exterior repair work on Calgary homes.
