What the work covers

  • Pressure washing and surface prep
  • Scraping, patching and caulking
  • Spot priming and full priming where needed
  • Finish coats on walls and trim
  • Cleanup and a final walk-through

House exterior painting

Full-house repaints on stucco, wood, fibre-cement and vinyl-clad homes, planned wall by wall so nothing gets skipped.

Stucco painting

Textured stucco needs the right washing, crack repair and a coating that bridges small hairline cracks while still letting the wall breathe. See our stucco repair service if the surface needs more than paint.

Trim, soffit and fascia

Often the first parts of a home to fail. Fresh caulking and a properly primed finish keep moisture out of the details that take the most weather.

Why Calgary is hard on exterior paint

Paint fails for reasons that are specific to place. In Calgary the sun is the first one: at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level there is less atmosphere filtering ultraviolet light, and south and west walls take the worst of it. UV breaks down the binder in the paint, which shows up as fading, chalking and a dull surface that no longer sheds water.

Then comes the weather. Chinook winds can lift winter temperatures well above zero and drop them again within hours, so moisture that enters a hairline crack can freeze, expand and pry the coating loose over and over. Hail adds impact damage and bruised surfaces. A paint job here has to be flexible, well bonded and sealed at every joint.

  • Fading and chalking, usually worst on south and west walls
  • Peeling or bubbling where moisture has been getting behind the paint
  • Open caulk joints around windows, doors and trim
  • Cracks in stucco that have widened over a few winters
  • Bare, grey or weathered wood on fascia, rails and doors
  • Hail marks on soft surfaces that need patching before repainting

The best time to paint a house exterior in Calgary

Most exterior acrylics need the surface and the air to stay above a minimum temperature, commonly around 10 degrees Celsius, while both the application and the first night of curing matter. Some low-temperature products are rated lower, so the label of the specific paint always decides. Practically, that makes late spring through early autumn the working window, with the most reliable stretch from June to September.

Timing within the day matters too. Painting a wall in direct, hot sun makes the coating dry too fast and can leave lap marks and poor adhesion, so crews follow the shade around the house. Surfaces also have to be fully dry after washing, and wind or an incoming shower can delay a day. Spring and early summer book up quickly, so asking about scheduling early gives you more choice of dates.

Exterior painting in Calgary: prep is most of the job

Wash and inspect

Dirt, pollen, chalk and mildew stop paint from bonding. Walls are washed and left to dry, which also reveals cracks, soft spots and failed coatings that were hidden by grime.

Scrape, patch and caulk

Loose paint is scraped back to a sound edge, damaged areas are filled, and open joints around windows, doors and trim are re-caulked with exterior-grade sealant.

Prime what needs it

Bare wood, patched stucco and stained areas get primer so the finish coats absorb evenly and hold. Sound existing paint is cleaned and lightly prepared instead of over-treated.

Apply the finish coats

Quality exterior paint goes on within the manufacturer’s recommended conditions, usually as two coats over the prepared surface, with careful cut-in at trim, windows and rooflines, and masking to protect glass, fixtures and landscaping.

Stucco, siding and trim: how each surface is handled

Stucco. The porous, textured surface soaks up paint, so it needs a thorough wash and a patched, sound base. Cracks are filled before coating, and a flexible elastomeric or similar masonry-rated coating is often a good fit. Where the damage goes beyond cosmetic, repair comes first; our stucco repair page explains what that involves.

Wood and fibre-cement siding. Wood needs scraping and priming wherever it is bare, with attention to end grain and lower courses where water collects. Fibre-cement (often sold under the Hardie name) takes paint well when joints and nail heads are sealed and the surface is clean.

Vinyl trim, soffit and fascia. Metal and vinyl details can be painted with the right primer and a colour that is not much darker than the original, since dark paint on vinyl absorbs heat. We confirm what is suitable before work starts.

Decks, fences and pergolas. Horizontal and rough-sawn wood usually performs better with a penetrating stain than with paint, so those surfaces are handled as deck and fence staining rather than exterior painting. If the inside of the house needs attention too, see our interior painting service, or visit our Calgary house painters page for an overview of all the painting work we do.

Choosing exterior colours that last

Colour looks different on a full wall in bright Calgary light than on a small swatch indoors. Test a sample on the actual wall and look at it in the morning, midday and evening. Think about the roof, brick or stone that will not change, and the neighbours’ palette if you care about the street.

Very dark colours fade faster under strong UV and run hotter on south and west walls, so a mid-tone often wears better in practice. Trim one step lighter or darker than the body gives definition without a harsh contrast.

What a clean scope looks like

  • Which walls, trim, soffit, fascia, doors and railings are included
  • The prep you will see: washing, scraping, patching, caulking, priming
  • Paint product, colours and number of coats, written down
  • What is excluded or needs a separate repair, such as rotted wood or failed stucco
  • Access, protection of plants and surfaces, and cleanup

When paint is part of a bigger exterior project

Fresh paint changes the look of a house quickly, but it only lasts when the surfaces underneath are sound. Many Calgary homes need a mix of work before or alongside a repaint: stucco patches after a hail storm, cracked parging along the foundation, siding or trim that took impact damage, or a deck and fence that have gone grey. Doing the repairs first means the new coating goes onto a solid, sealed base instead of hiding a problem that will show through by next spring.

Our exterior repair services page brings that work together in one place, and if you are still deciding where to spend first, our article on exterior upgrades that actually change the look of your home walks through the changes that make the biggest visible difference. For hail damage specifically, our write-up on siding and garage door repair after hail explains what gets checked after a storm.

Exterior painting questions in Calgary

How often should a Calgary house be repainted?

There is no fixed number. Paint on sun-exposed walls usually shows wear sooner than shaded sides, and quality of prep matters as much as age. Chalking, fading, peeling and open caulk are the signs to watch for.

Can you paint stucco?

Yes. Stucco is washed, cracks are filled, and a suitable masonry or elastomeric coating is applied. If the stucco is loose, hollow or heavily damaged, it should be repaired before painting.

What temperature is too cold to paint outside?

It depends on the product. Many exterior paints specify a minimum around 10 degrees Celsius for air and surface, and some are formulated for cooler conditions. We follow the manufacturer label and the forecast.

Do you power wash before painting?

Washing is a standard first step, done with care so water is not forced behind siding or into stucco cracks. The wall is then left to dry fully before any repair or paint goes on.

How do I get an exterior painting estimate?

Send the address, a few photos of each side of the house and what you would like done through the quote form, or call 403-714-0080. Estimates are free.

Can vinyl siding or trim be painted?

Often, yes, with a primer made for the surface and a colour that is not much darker than the original. Dark colours absorb more heat and can make vinyl warp, so the surface and colour are checked before any work is quoted.
